Bian
Bian Que (Chinese: 扁鵲, Wade–Giles: Pien Ch'iao; 407–310 BC) was a legendary Chinese physician from the Warring States period. He reportedly possessed extraordinary medical skills, particularly in the areas of pulse taking and acupuncture therapy. He is considered the earliest known Chinese physician and the founder of scientific medicine in China.
Life and career[edit | edit source]
Bian Que was the pseudonym of Qin Yueren, but he is better known by his nickname. His medical skills were many and varied, and he was particularly skilled in pulse taking and acupuncture therapy. He is often credited with being the first to record the medical use of the pulse.
Bian Que believed that the human body could be treated as a whole, rather than as a collection of isolated parts. He proposed the concept of the "Four Diagnostic Methods" (inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiry, and pulse taking and palpation) in Chinese Medicine.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Bian Que's medical skills and methods have had a profound influence on Chinese medicine and are still in use today. His story has been told and retold throughout the centuries, and he is often depicted in Chinese art and literature.
