Bill Drayton

Bill Drayton (born September 30, 1943) is an American social entrepreneur and the founder of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, an organization that supports the field of social entrepreneurship.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Bill Drayton was born in New York City, New York, and grew up in a family that valued public service and social change. He attended Harvard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later attended Balliol College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and completed his education with a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.

Career[edit | edit source]

Drayton began his career at McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm, where he worked on issues related to public policy and social change. In 1980, he founded Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, which identifies and supports leading social entrepreneurs around the world. Ashoka has since become a global network of social entrepreneurs who are dedicated to solving social problems through innovative solutions.

Ashoka: Innovators for the Public is a nonprofit organization that supports social entrepreneurs by providing them with financial support, professional services, and a global network of peers. The organization operates in over 90 countries and has supported more than 3,500 social entrepreneurs. Ashoka's mission is to "shape a global, entrepreneurial, competitive citizen sector" and to "develop the profession of social entrepreneurship."

Bill Drayton has received numerous awards for his work in social entrepreneurship, including the MacArthur Fellowship in 1984, often referred to as the "Genius Grant." He has also been recognized by organizations such as the World Economic Forum and has been named one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report.

Drayton is known for his commitment to social change and innovation. He continues to be actively involved in Ashoka and other initiatives that promote social entrepreneurship and public service.
