Billy Goat Tavern
Billy Goat Tavern is a chain of taverns located in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The tavern is best known for its association with the Chicago Cubs and its role in the Curse of the Billy Goat, a popular urban legend in Major League Baseball.
History[edit | edit source]
The original Billy Goat Tavern was founded in 1934 by William Sianis, a Greek immigrant. Sianis purchased the tavern, which was then called the Lincoln Tavern, for $205. He later changed the name to Billy Goat Tavern after a goat fell off a truck and wandered into the tavern. Sianis adopted the goat, named it Murphy, and the tavern's name was changed to reflect this new mascot.
The Curse of the Billy Goat[edit | edit source]
The Curse of the Billy Goat originated in 1945 during the World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers. Sianis and his goat were asked to leave Wrigley Field because the goat's odor was bothering other fans. Sianis was outraged and declared, "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more." The Cubs did not win a World Series for 71 years, finally breaking the curse in 2016.
Locations[edit | edit source]
The original Billy Goat Tavern was located on West Madison Street but moved to its current location at 430 North Michigan Avenue in 1964. This location is famously situated below Michigan Avenue and is accessible via a set of stairs. The tavern has since expanded to multiple locations throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.
Menu[edit | edit source]
The Billy Goat Tavern is known for its simple menu, which includes cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and fries. The tavern's slogan, "Cheezborger, Cheezborger, Cheezborger. No Pepsi. Coke," was popularized by a Saturday Night Live sketch featuring John Belushi.
In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]
The Billy Goat Tavern has been featured in various forms of media, including television shows, movies, and books. The most notable reference is the Saturday Night Live sketch, which brought national attention to the tavern.
