Bing is a web search engine owned and operated by Microsoft. It was unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on May 28, 2009, at the All Things Digital conference in San Diego, California, and was fully operational on June 3, 2009, replacing Live Search.

Bing was developed to compete with other major search engines such as Google and Yahoo. It was initially known as Kumo during its development phase. The name "Bing" was chosen to evoke the sound of a "moment of discovery and decision making".
Launch and Development[edit | edit source]
Bing was launched with several new features, including a list of search suggestions and related searches (called "Explore pane") based on semantic technology from Powerset, which Microsoft had acquired in 2008. Bing also introduced a new interface with daily changing background images.

Bing offers a variety of features that enhance the search experience:
- Bing Image Search: Allows users to search for images and offers advanced filters for size, color, type, and layout.
- Bing Video Search: Provides a preview of videos directly in the search results.
- Bing Maps: Offers mapping services similar to Google Maps, including road maps, aerial views, and 3D views.
- Bing News: Aggregates news from various sources and provides a comprehensive news search.
- Bing Shopping: Allows users to search for products and compare prices from different retailers.

Bing is integrated into several Microsoft products, enhancing their functionality:
- Microsoft Edge: Bing is the default search engine for Microsoft's web browser.
- Windows 10: Bing is integrated into the Cortana digital assistant and the Windows search feature.
- Microsoft Office: Bing is used for the "Smart Lookup" feature, providing contextual information and web search results within Office applications.

Bing has steadily increased its market share since its launch, although it remains behind Google in terms of global usage. As of 2023, Bing holds a significant share of the search market in the United States and continues to grow internationally.
Privacy and Data Use[edit | edit source]
Microsoft has implemented several privacy measures for Bing users, including the ability to search privately using "InPrivate" mode in Microsoft Edge. Bing also offers a "Do Not Track" feature to limit tracking by advertisers.
