Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) is a not-for-profit public sector undertaking, set up by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, as an interface agency to strengthen and empower the emerging biotechnology industry in India. It plays a pivotal role in shaping the biotechnology landscape of the country by bridging the gap between industry and academia. BIRAC focuses on the development and commercialization of new biotechnology products and processes, especially those which have the potential to address major societal needs in the areas of healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.

BIRAC was established by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, under the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2012. Since its inception, BIRAC has been instrumental in fostering the growth of the biotechnology sector in India by supporting innovation and entrepreneurial activities across the biotech spectrum.

Objectives[edit | edit source]

The primary objectives of BIRAC include:

  • To promote innovative research in biotechnology and its applications.
  • To support the creation and development of startups and SMEs in the biotech sector.
  • To facilitate public-private partnership and collaboration for the advancement of biotechnology research and development.
  • To enhance the capacity of the Indian biotechnology industry to compete globally.

BIRAC has launched several programs and initiatives to support its objectives:

  • Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG): Aimed at supporting entrepreneurs and small companies to realize their innovative ideas in biotechnology.
  • Contract Research and Services Scheme (CRS): Designed to help public and private enterprises undertake contract research.
  • Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development in Biotechnology (SEED): Focuses on creating sustainable startups in the biotech field.
  • Biotech Equity Fund: A fund created to provide financial assistance to startups and SMEs in biotechnology.

BIRAC has had a significant impact on the biotechnology industry in India. It has supported over 1000 startups and SMEs, facilitated the development of numerous innovative products and technologies, and helped create thousands of jobs in the biotech sector. BIRAC's efforts have also led to increased investment in biotechnology research and development, both from the government and the private sector.
