Birjand

Birjand is the east Iranian provincial capital of South Khorasan and the centre of the county Birjand County. The city is known for its saffron, barberry, rug and handmade carpet exports.

Birjand has been mentioned in numerous historical documents dating back to the pre-Islamic era. The city was the center of the ancient land of Quhestan, which included present-day Quhistan County and parts of Afghanistan.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Birjand is located on the eastern side of Iran, close to the border with Afghanistan. The city is situated in a valley between the Binalud and South Khorasan mountain ranges.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Birjand is based on agriculture, particularly the production of saffron and barberry. The city is also known for its rug and handmade carpet exports.

Birjand is home to several historical and cultural sites, including the Birjand Castle, Ghafariyeh Dome, and the Bazaar of Birjand.
