Bite Plate

A bite plate is a removable dental appliance which is custom-made to fit the upper or lower teeth. It is primarily used in orthodontics and dentistry to correct malocclusions and protect the teeth and jaw from the effects of bruxism or teeth grinding.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of a bite plate is to prevent the upper and lower teeth from coming into contact with each other. This is particularly useful in cases of bruxism, where the patient grinds their teeth during sleep, which can lead to tooth wear and jaw pain. Bite plates can also be used to correct certain types of malocclusions, such as overbites and underbites, by altering the way the upper and lower teeth meet.

Types[edit | edit source]

There are several types of bite plates, including the Hawley bite plate, the anterior bite plate, and the posterior bite plate. The Hawley bite plate is the most common type and consists of a plastic body that covers the roof of the mouth and wire clasps that hold the plate in place. The anterior bite plate is used to correct overbites, while the posterior bite plate is used to correct underbites.

Construction[edit | edit source]

Bite plates are typically constructed from acrylic resin, which is molded to fit the patient's teeth. The process begins with the dentist taking an impression of the patient's teeth using a soft, pliable material. This impression is then used to create a model of the patient's teeth, which is used as a guide to construct the bite plate.

Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]

While bite plates are generally safe and effective, they can cause discomfort and difficulty speaking when first worn. There is also a risk of the bite plate becoming dislodged during sleep and causing choking. Regular check-ups with the dentist are necessary to monitor the patient's progress and make any necessary adjustments to the bite plate.
