Blancanieves is a 2012 Spanish black-and-white silent drama film written and directed by Pablo Berger. The film is a reimagining of the classic fairy tale Snow White set in 1920s Spain. It stars Maribel Verdú, Macarena García, Daniel Giménez Cacho, and Ángela Molina.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The story follows a young girl named Carmen, who is the daughter of a famous bullfighter, Antonio Villalta. After a tragic accident during a bullfight, Antonio is left paralyzed, and Carmen's mother dies during childbirth. Carmen is raised by her cruel stepmother, Encarna, who mistreats her. As Carmen grows older, she discovers her father's past and her own passion for bullfighting. She eventually escapes her stepmother's clutches and joins a troupe of bullfighting dwarfs, adopting the stage name "Blancanieves."

Cast[edit | edit source]

Production[edit | edit source]

The film was shot in black-and-white and is silent, with intertitles used to convey dialogue and narrative information. The decision to make the film silent and in black-and-white was a stylistic choice by director Pablo Berger to evoke the era in which the story is set and to pay homage to early cinema.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Blancanieves received critical acclaim for its unique visual style, performances, and its innovative take on the Snow White story. It won numerous awards, including the Goya Award for Best Film, Best Actress for Maribel Verdú, and Best New Actress for Macarena García.
