Blepharis edulis is a species of plant in the family Acanthaceae. It is commonly known as the Uttanjan, and is native to Africa, Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent.

Description[edit | edit source]

Blepharis edulis is a perennial herb that grows up to 1.5 meters in height. The plant has a woody base, with stems that are quadrangular and covered in stiff hairs. The leaves are opposite, ovate to lanceolate, and have a spiny margin. The flowers are purple to pink, and are borne in dense spikes. The fruit is a capsule containing numerous seeds.

Blepharis edulis is widely distributed across Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent. It is typically found in dry, sandy soils in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, scrublands, and open woodlands.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Blepharis edulis has a number of uses in traditional medicine. The leaves and seeds are used to treat a variety of ailments, including coughs, colds, and skin diseases. The plant is also used as a fodder for livestock in some regions.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Blepharis edulis is a hardy plant that can tolerate a range of soil types and conditions. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and is drought-tolerant once established.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

While Blepharis edulis is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction, habitat loss and overharvesting for medicinal use are potential threats to the species.
