Bob and Margaret is a British-Canadian animated television series that aired from 1998 to 2001. The show was created by David Fine and Alison Snowden. It is based on the Academy Award-winning short film Bob's Birthday, which also was created by Fine and Snowden. The series revolves around the mundane yet endearingly humorous lives of Bob Fish, a dentist, and his wife Margaret, a chiropodist. The couple resides in South London, England, in the earlier seasons before relocating to Toronto, Canada, in the later seasons. This move reflects the show's British-Canadian production roots and allowed for the exploration of cross-cultural themes.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The series focuses on the everyday adventures and misadventures of the titular characters, Bob and Margaret. Their lives are characterized by ordinary situations that often take comedic turns, including dealing with their pets, friends, and various professional challenges. The show is known for its dry humor, realistic portrayal of middle-aged life, and the loving, if occasionally strained, relationship between Bob and Margaret.

Characters[edit | edit source]

  • Bob Fish: A dentist who often finds himself in awkward or uncomfortable situations, both in his professional and personal life.
  • Margaret Fish: Bob's wife, a chiropodist, who tends to be more level-headed than Bob but also has her moments of absurdity.
  • Various Secondary Characters: The series also features a wide range of recurring characters, including Bob and Margaret's friends, family, and pets, who add depth and humor to the show's exploration of everyday life.

Production[edit | edit source]

The show was produced by Snowden Fine Animation and Nelvana Limited, in association with various other companies, including Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and Comedy Central in the United States. The transition of the show's setting from London to Toronto in later seasons was a unique aspect of its production, reflecting its international collaboration.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Bob and Margaret received positive reviews for its witty writing, relatable characters, and its ability to find humor in the banality of everyday life. It appealed to adults with its mature themes and subtle humor. The series won several awards and nominations, further cementing its place as a notable entry in the realm of adult animated series.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although Bob and Margaret is not as widely recognized as some other animated series aimed at adults, it has maintained a loyal fan base. Its portrayal of a realistically flawed, yet deeply affectionate couple, along with its unique blend of British and Canadian humor, has left a lasting impact on its audience.
