# Boccia
Boccia is a precision ball sport, similar to bocce, and is designed specifically for athletes with severe physical disabilities. It is governed by the Boccia International Sports Federation (BISFed) and is one of the Paralympic sports.
History[edit | edit source]
Boccia was originally developed in the 1970s for people with cerebral palsy. It was first introduced to the Paralympic Games in 1984. Since then, it has grown in popularity and is now played in over 50 countries worldwide.
Rules and Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Boccia is played on a smooth, flat surface. The game can be played individually, in pairs, or in teams of three. The objective is to throw leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball, known as the "jack".
Equipment[edit | edit source]
The sport uses six red balls, six blue balls, and one white jack. The balls are made of leather and are designed to be easy to grip and throw.
Court[edit | edit source]
The boccia court is rectangular, measuring 12.5 meters by 6 meters. It is divided into six throwing boxes, where players must remain during their throws.
Classification[edit | edit source]
Players are classified based on their physical abilities. There are four main classifications: BC1, BC2, BC3, and BC4. Each classification has specific rules regarding the use of assistive devices and the level of assistance allowed.
Competitions[edit | edit source]
Boccia is played at various levels, from local clubs to international competitions. The most prestigious event is the Paralympic Games, held every four years. Other major competitions include the World Boccia Championships and regional championships.
Strategy[edit | edit source]
Boccia is a game of strategy and precision. Players must carefully plan their throws to position their balls closer to the jack than their opponents. Defensive and offensive strategies are employed to block opponents' balls or knock them away from the jack.
