Boise is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Idaho, and is the county seat of Ada County. Located on the Boise River in southwestern Idaho, the population of Boise at the 2020 Census was 240,380, the 80th largest in the United States. Its estimated population in 2020 was 240,380.

Boise is rich in history. The area was originally inhabited by the Shoshone and Bannock tribes before European settlers arrived. The city's name is derived from the French word "boisé", which means "wooded". The name was given by French-Canadian fur trappers who were among the first Europeans to explore the area.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Boise is located in the southwestern part of Idaho. The city is surrounded by mountains on the northeast and the Snake River plain on the south. The Boise River, a tributary of the Snake River, flows through the city.

Boise's economy is diverse and includes sectors such as technology, healthcare, agriculture, and education. Major employers in the city include Micron Technology, St. Luke's Health System, and Boise State University.

Boise is known for its vibrant arts scene, outdoor recreation, and culinary excellence. The city is home to the Boise Art Museum, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, and the Boise Philharmonic, among other cultural institutions.

Boise is served by the Boise School District. The city is also home to Boise State University, the largest university in the state of Idaho.

Boise is served by several major highways, including Interstates 84 and 184. The city is also home to the Boise Airport, which offers flights to many major U.S. cities.
