Bombilla is a traditional drinking straw used in South America, particularly in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil. The submerged end is flared, with small holes or slots that allow the brewed liquid in, but block the chunky matter that makes up much of the mixture.

History

The bombilla is believed to have been invented by the indigenous Guaraní of Paraguay, who used hollowed-out bird bones as straws to drink mate.
