Boyd is a surname of Scottish origin, and may also serve as a given name. The name has multiple origins including Gaelic, Scottish, and Irish. It is derived from the Gaelic "buidhe" which means yellow or fair-haired. The name has been used in Scotland since the reign of King Robert I.

The Boyd family name was first used by the ancient Strathclyde-Briton people of the Scottish/English Borderlands. The first Boyd family lived in the county of Ayrshire where they had been granted lands by King Robert I of Scotland. The name is said to be descended from Robert, brother of the Norman living in 1066 A.D.
