Bracket fungus
Bracket Fungus is a type of fungus that grows on trees and dead wood in the form of shelf-like structures. They are also known as shelf fungi or polypores. The name "bracket fungus" comes from their bracket or shelf-like appearance.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Bracket fungi are characterized by their tough, woody texture and their growth pattern. They grow in a semi-circular or bracket-like shape, often in tiers. The upper surface is typically flat or slightly concave, allowing for the collection of rainwater, which aids in spore dispersal. The underside of the bracket fungus is usually covered in small pores, which contain the basidia where spores are produced.
Life Cycle[edit | edit source]
The life cycle of bracket fungi is complex and involves both sexual and asexual reproduction. The fungus begins as a spore, which germinates to produce a mycelium. The mycelium grows and eventually forms a bracket-shaped fruiting body. The fruiting body produces spores, which are released and spread by wind or water. When a spore lands in a suitable location, it germinates and the cycle begins again.
Ecological Role[edit | edit source]
Bracket fungi play a crucial role in the ecosystem. They are one of the primary decomposers of wood, breaking down the tough lignin and cellulose fibers and returning nutrients to the soil. Some species of bracket fungi are also parasitic, infecting and killing living trees.
Species[edit | edit source]
There are many species of bracket fungi, each with its own unique characteristics. Some of the most well-known include Ganoderma lucidum, also known as the reishi mushroom, and Fomes fomentarius, commonly known as the tinder fungus.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Bracket fungi have been used by humans for various purposes throughout history. Some species are edible and have been used as food, while others have been used for medicinal purposes. The tinder fungus, for example, was used by early humans to start fires.
