Brasserie d'Achouffe
Brasserie d'Achouffe is a Belgian brewery located in the Ardennes region, specifically in the village of Achouffe, in the municipality of Houffalize. The brewery is renowned for its production of Belgian beers, particularly its flagship beer, La Chouffe.
History[edit | edit source]
Brasserie d'Achouffe was founded in 1982 by two brothers-in-law, Pierre Gobron and Christian Bauweraerts. The brewery started as a hobby project but quickly gained popularity due to the unique taste and quality of its beers. In 2006, the brewery was acquired by the Duvel Moortgat Brewery, a larger Belgian brewery known for its Duvel beer.
Beers[edit | edit source]
The brewery produces a variety of beers, each with its own distinct flavor profile. Some of the most popular beers include:
- La Chouffe: A strong golden ale with a fruity and spicy flavor.
- Mc Chouffe: A Scottish-style ale with a rich, malty taste.
- Houblon Chouffe: A Belgian IPA that combines the hoppy bitterness of an IPA with the fruity and spicy notes of a Belgian ale.
- Cherry Chouffe: A fruit beer made with cherries, offering a sweet and tart flavor.
Brewery Tours[edit | edit source]
Brasserie d'Achouffe offers guided tours of its facilities, allowing visitors to learn about the brewing process and the history of the brewery. The tours often conclude with a tasting session, where visitors can sample the different beers produced by the brewery.
Achouffe Gnomes[edit | edit source]
One of the unique aspects of Brasserie d'Achouffe is its branding, which features gnomes. These gnomes, known as "Chouffes," are a central part of the brewery's identity and are featured on the labels of its beers. The gnomes are said to inhabit the Ardennes forest and are a playful nod to the folklore of the region.
