Brave
Brave[edit | edit source]
Brave is a free and open-source web browser developed by Brave Software, Inc. based on the Chromium web browser. It is designed to provide a faster, more private browsing experience by blocking ads and website trackers by default. Brave also offers a unique approach to online advertising through its Basic Attention Token (BAT) system.
History[edit | edit source]
Brave Software was founded in 2015 by Brendan Eich, the creator of JavaScript and former CEO of Mozilla Corporation. The first version of the Brave browser was released in January 2016. Initially, Brave included a feature that replaced ads on websites with ads from its own network, but this feature was later removed in favor of the BAT system.
Features[edit | edit source]
Privacy and Security[edit | edit source]
Brave is designed with privacy in mind. It blocks third-party ads and trackers by default, which not only enhances privacy but also speeds up page loading times. Brave also includes features such as HTTPS Everywhere, which ensures that users connect to websites over a secure connection whenever possible.
Basic Attention Token (BAT)[edit | edit source]
The Basic Attention Token is a cryptocurrency integrated into the Brave browser. Users can earn BAT by opting into viewing privacy-respecting ads. These tokens can then be used to tip content creators or to support websites directly. This system aims to create a more equitable revenue model for both users and publishers.
Speed and Performance[edit | edit source]
By blocking ads and trackers, Brave claims to offer significantly faster browsing speeds compared to traditional browsers. This is because ads and trackers can consume a large amount of bandwidth and processing power.
Reception[edit | edit source]
Brave has received praise for its focus on privacy and speed. However, it has also faced criticism, particularly in its early days, for its approach to ad replacement. The introduction of the BAT system has been seen as a more balanced approach to online advertising.
