Brent Stanton 2015

Brent Stanton is a former professional Australian rules football player who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Born on May 1, 1986, in Melbourne, Victoria, Stanton was known for his endurance, versatility, and consistent performance on the field.

Early Life and Junior Career[edit | edit source]

Stanton grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Modewarre, where he displayed a keen interest in football from a young age. He played junior football for the Modewarre Football Club in the Bellarine Football League. His talent was evident early on, and he quickly progressed through the ranks, eventually playing for the Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup, which is Victoria's premier under-18 football competition.

AFL Career[edit | edit source]

Brent Stanton was drafted by the Essendon Football Club with the 13th overall pick in the 2003 AFL Draft. He made his AFL debut in 2004 and quickly established himself as a key player for the Bombers. Stanton was known for his running capacity and ability to cover significant ground during games, often leading the team in distance covered.

Throughout his career, Stanton played a variety of roles for Essendon, including midfield, wing, and occasionally as a defender. His versatility and work ethic were highly valued by the team. One of his standout seasons came in 2011, where he was among the club's leaders in disposals, marks, and goals, showcasing his all-around ability on the football field.

Stanton's career, however, was not without controversy. He was one of the 34 past and present Essendon players who were found guilty of using a banned substance during the 2012 season as part of the infamous Essendon supplements saga. This resulted in Stanton, along with his teammates, being suspended for the entire 2016 season.

Despite this setback, Stanton returned to play for Essendon in 2017, his final season before announcing his retirement. Over his 14-year career, he played a total of 255 games for the Bombers, scoring 182 goals.

Post-AFL Career[edit | edit source]

After retiring from professional football, Brent Stanton transitioned into coaching. He took on roles at various levels, including a stint as a development coach at Essendon. His experience and knowledge of the game have made him a valuable asset in developing young talent and mentoring the next generation of AFL players.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Brent Stanton's legacy in the AFL is marked by his resilience, work ethic, and versatility. Despite the challenges he faced, including the year-long suspension, he remained a respected figure in the sport. His contributions to the Essendon Football Club, both on and off the field, have left a lasting impact.
