Breweriana

Breweriana refers to any article containing a brewery or brand name, typically in connection with collecting them. This includes beer cans, bottles, openers, tin signs, coasters, beer trays, wooden cases and neon signs. The term is a portmanteau of the words "brewery" and "Americana".

History[edit | edit source]

The history of breweriana is as old as the history of brewing. As early as the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt, brewing has been a significant part of culture and daily life. The first known examples of breweriana are the beer stones used by these ancient cultures.

Collecting Breweriana[edit | edit source]

Collecting breweriana has become a popular hobby, especially since the 1970s. The Brewery Collectibles Club of America (BCCA), formerly known as the Beer Can Collectors of America, is one of the oldest and largest organizations dedicated to the collection of beer cans and other breweriana.

Types of Breweriana[edit | edit source]

There are many different types of breweriana that collectors seek. Some of the most popular include:

  • Beer Cans: The first beer cans were produced in the United States in the 1930s. They have since become one of the most popular types of breweriana to collect.
  • Beer Bottles: Collectors often seek out old and rare beer bottles, especially those from defunct breweries.
  • Beer Trays: These were often used in bars and restaurants to serve beer. They often feature the logo and branding of a particular brewery.
  • Beer Coasters: These are small, typically round pieces of cardboard that are placed under a beer glass to protect the surface of the table.
  • Neon Signs: These are often sought after for their aesthetic appeal. They were typically used in bars and restaurants to advertise a particular brand of beer.
