Brodmann area 43
Region of the cerebral cortex in the human brain
Brodmann area 43 (BA43) is a subdivision of the cerebral cortex in the human brain. It is part of the parietal lobe and is located in the postcentral gyrus. This area is also known as the subcentral area and is involved in processing sensory information related to taste.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
Brodmann area 43 is situated in the parietal lobe, specifically in the postcentral gyrus, which is located posterior to the central sulcus. It is bordered by Brodmann area 40 (supramarginal gyrus) and Brodmann area 3 (primary somatosensory cortex). The area is characterized by its unique cytoarchitecture, which distinguishes it from surrounding regions.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of Brodmann area 43 is related to the processing of gustatory (taste) stimuli. It is considered part of the gustatory cortex, which is responsible for the perception of taste. This area receives input from the thalamus, specifically from the ventral posteromedial nucleus, which relays taste information from the taste buds via the cranial nerves.
Cytoarchitecture[edit | edit source]
Brodmann area 43 is defined by its distinct cytoarchitectonic features. It is composed of six layers, typical of the neocortex, but with specific variations in cell density and organization. The area is characterized by a relatively thin layer IV, which is densely packed with granular cells. This feature helps differentiate it from adjacent Brodmann areas.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Damage to Brodmann area 43 can result in ageusia, a loss of taste perception. This can occur due to stroke, traumatic brain injury, or neurosurgical procedures that affect the parietal lobe. Understanding the role of BA43 in taste perception is important for diagnosing and treating conditions related to taste dysfunction.
