Brody

Brody is a city located in the Lviv Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. It is the administrative center of the Brody Raion (district), and is located in the valley of the upper Styr River, approximately 90 kilometres northeast of the oblast capital, Lviv. Brody is the junction of the Druzhba and Odessa–Brody oil pipelines.

History[edit | edit source]

The first mention of a settlement on the site of Brody is dated 1084 (see Normanist theory). It is believed to have been destroyed by Batu Khan in 1241. From 1441 Brody was the property of different feudal families (Jan Sieniński, from 1511 the Nemyrych family, from 1584 the Koniecpolski family, and from 1642 the Potocki family).

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of 2001, the population of Brody is 23,784. The main ethnic groups are Ukrainians (77.7%), Russians (11.1%), and Poles (8.5%).

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Brody is dominated by industries such as oil refining, food processing, and various light industries.

Notable people[edit | edit source]

Several notable individuals were born or have lived in Brody, including Joseph Roth, Karl Emil Franzos, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Shmuel Agnon, Bruno Schulz, and Martin Buber.
