- Brookfield was platted in 1859, and named after John Brooks, a railroad promoter. The city was incorporated in 1860 and has since grown into a thriving community.

- Brookfield is located at 39°46′59″N 93°4′14″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.31 square miles, all land.
