Brown University is a private Ivy League research university located in Providence, Rhode Island. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in the United States.

Brown University was founded in 1764, making it the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the U.S. The university was originally named the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, but was renamed in 1804 in honor of Nicholas Brown Jr., a prominent benefactor.

Academics[edit | edit source]

Brown University offers undergraduate and graduate programs across a wide range of disciplines. The university is particularly well-known for its open curriculum, which allows students to design their own course of study without the constraints of a traditional core curriculum.
