Bruce Wayne, also known by his vigilante persona Batman, is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Bruce Wayne was first introduced in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. Bruce Wayne is the sole heir to the Wayne fortune after his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, were murdered in a mugging gone wrong in Gotham City. This traumatic event leads him to train extensively to the peak of physical and intellectual perfection and don a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime. Batman operates in Gotham City, assisted by various supporting characters including his butler Alfred Pennyworth, and fights an assortment of villains influenced by the characters' rogues gallery, such as the Joker, Catwoman, and Two-Face.
