Bual

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Bual is a type of grape used in the production of Madeira wine. It is one of the four classic varieties of grapes used in Madeira production, along with Sercial, Verdelho, and Malmsey. Bual is known for producing wines that are medium-rich and have a distinctly sweet flavor profile.

History[edit | edit source]

The Bual grape has a long history in Madeira wine production. It was first introduced to the Madeira Island in the 17th century. The grape is believed to have originated in Portugal, although its exact origins are unclear.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Bual grapes are characterized by their small size and thick skins. They are highly resistant to disease and have a high sugar content, which makes them ideal for the production of sweet wines. The wines produced from Bual grapes are typically medium-rich and have a distinct sweetness, balanced by a high level of acidity. They often have flavors of dried fruits, honey, and spices.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Bual grapes are grown primarily on the Madeira Island, although they can also be found in other parts of Portugal. The grape prefers warmer climates and is typically harvested in late September or early October. The grapes are often left on the vine for an extended period of time to allow the sugar content to increase.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

In Madeira wine production, Bual grapes are typically fermented in stainless steel tanks before being fortified with brandy. The wine is then aged using the traditional canteiro method, which involves aging the wine in barrels in warm rooms for a period of several years. This process results in a wine that is both sweet and highly acidic, with a complex flavor profile.

Food Pairing[edit | edit source]

Bual Madeira is often served as a dessert wine, but it can also be paired with a variety of foods. It pairs well with rich, creamy desserts, blue cheeses, and spicy foods. It can also be used in cooking, particularly in sauces and reductions.
