Bubble-net feeding

Bubble-net feeding is a unique and complex feeding technique employed by certain species of cetaceans, most notably the humpback whale. This method involves the use of bubbles to corral and concentrate prey, making it easier for the whales to consume large quantities of food in a single gulp.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Bubble-net feeding is a cooperative hunting strategy that involves a group of whales working together to capture prey. The whales dive deep into the water and then swim in an upward spiral, releasing a stream of bubbles as they go. These bubbles form a "net" that traps and confuses the prey, which are typically small fish or krill. The whales then swim up through the center of the bubble net with their mouths open, swallowing large amounts of prey.

Process[edit | edit source]

The process of bubble-net feeding is coordinated and requires cooperation among the whales. One whale, known as the "bubble blower", dives deep and begins to swim in a circle while releasing bubbles from its blowhole. This creates a cylindrical wall of bubbles that rises to the surface and encloses the prey.

Simultaneously, another whale, the "screamer", emits a series of loud, high-pitched sounds. These sounds are believed to help herd the prey into the bubble net and may also serve to disorient and confuse the prey.

Once the bubble net is in place and the prey is contained within it, the rest of the pod swims up through the center of the net with their mouths open, engulfing large quantities of prey.

While several species of whales have been observed using bubbles in their feeding strategies, the humpback whale is the most well-known practitioner of bubble-net feeding. Other species, such as the minke whale and the blue whale, have been observed using similar techniques, but these instances are less common.

Ecological Impact[edit | edit source]

Bubble-net feeding has significant implications for the marine ecosystem. By consuming large quantities of prey in a single gulp, whales that use this feeding strategy can significantly impact the populations of their prey species. This, in turn, can have ripple effects throughout the food chain.
