Butter sole (Solea senegalensis) is a species of flatfish belonging to the Soleidae family. It is commonly found in the coastal waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Portugal to Senegal. The butter sole is known for its delicate flavor and tender texture, making it a popular choice in seafood cuisine.

Description[edit | edit source]

The butter sole has a flat, oval-shaped body with both eyes located on the upper side. It is typically brownish in color with darker spots and a white underside. The fish can grow up to 30 centimeters in length and has a distinctive diamond-shaped tail.

Habitat and Diet[edit | edit source]

Butter soles are bottom-dwelling fish that inhabit sandy or muddy seabeds. They are typically found at depths ranging from 10 to 100 meters. These fish are carnivorous and feed on small crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine organisms found in their habitat.

Reproduction[edit | edit source]

Butter soles are known to spawn during the spring and summer months. The female fish release their eggs into the water, where they are fertilized by the male fish. The eggs hatch into larvae, which eventually develop into juvenile butter soles.

Butter sole pairs well with a variety of seasonings and sauces, making it a versatile ingredient in seafood dishes.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

The butter sole population is currently considered stable, with no major threats to its survival. However, overfishing and habitat destruction pose potential risks to the species in the future. Conservation efforts are in place to monitor and protect butter sole populations in their natural habitat.
