Bypass (surgical)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Bypass (surgical) - A bypass is a surgical procedure in which a new path is created for blood to flow around a blocked or narrowed artery. The most common type of bypass is a coronary artery bypass, which is used to treat coronary heart disease. The procedure involves using a blood vessel from another part of the body, such as the leg or chest, to bypass the blocked artery and improve blood flow to the heart. Bypass surgery can be life-saving and is often recommended for individuals with severe coronary artery disease.
