CD11c

CD11c is a type of protein that in humans is encoded by the ITGAX gene. It is also known as Integrin Subunit Alpha X (ITGAX) and is a part of the integrin alpha chain family.

Function[edit | edit source]

CD11c is involved in various immune responses. It is expressed on the surface of dendritic cells, which are antigen-presenting cells of the immune system. CD11c plays a crucial role in the process of phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and other particles by these cells.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Alterations in the expression of CD11c have been associated with certain diseases. For instance, increased levels of CD11c are found in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. In contrast, decreased levels of CD11c are associated with immunodeficiency conditions.

Research[edit | edit source]

CD11c is a marker often used in research to identify dendritic cells in tissue samples. It is also used in studies investigating the immune response to various diseases, including cancer, HIV, and autoimmune diseases.
