Caitiff
Caitiff is a term used in the World of Darkness role-playing game, particularly in the Vampire: The Masquerade series. It refers to a vampire who does not belong to any specific clan or whose clan heritage is unknown. Caitiff are often seen as outcasts within Kindred society, lacking the support and structure that clan membership provides.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Caitiff vampires are unique in that they do not exhibit the distinct physical or mystical traits associated with the various clans. This lack of clan affiliation can result from several factors, including being abandoned by their sire, the death of their sire before the Embrace could be completed, or the deliberate choice to reject their clan. As a result, Caitiff often have a more difficult time navigating the complex social hierarchies of Kindred society.
Abilities and Weaknesses[edit | edit source]
Unlike clan-affiliated vampires, Caitiff do not inherit the specific Disciplines or weaknesses of any clan. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. On one hand, they have the freedom to develop any Disciplines they choose, but on the other hand, they lack the inherent strengths that come with clan membership. Additionally, Caitiff are often viewed with suspicion and disdain by other vampires, making it harder for them to find allies and support.
Role in Kindred Society[edit | edit source]
Caitiff occupy a precarious position within Kindred society. They are often marginalized and discriminated against by clan-affiliated vampires, who view them as inferior or untrustworthy. Despite this, some Caitiff manage to carve out a niche for themselves, using their independence and versatility to their advantage. In some cases, Caitiff may band together to form their own communities or seek refuge in cities with more tolerant attitudes towards clanless vampires.
Notable Caitiff[edit | edit source]
While Caitiff are generally less prominent in Kindred society, there are a few notable individuals who have made significant impacts. These vampires often use their unique position to challenge the status quo and advocate for greater acceptance of clanless Kindred.
