The California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) is a state agency in California responsible for coordinating and implementing environmental protection policies. Established in 1991, CalEPA's mission is to restore, protect, and enhance the environment, to ensure public health, environmental quality, and economic vitality.

CalEPA was created by Governor Pete Wilson in 1991 through an executive order, and its establishment was later codified by the California Legislature. The agency was formed to consolidate various environmental programs and to provide a more unified approach to environmental protection in the state.
Structure[edit | edit source]
CalEPA is composed of several boards, departments, and offices, each with specific responsibilities:
- Air Resources Board (ARB) - Responsible for air quality and emissions standards.
- Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) - Regulates pesticide sales and use.
- Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) - Manages hazardous waste and site cleanup.
