California Fitness was founded in 1996 by Eric Levine, a fitness industry entrepreneur. The first club opened in Hong Kong, and the brand quickly expanded to other major cities in Asia. The chain was known for its large, modern facilities and a wide range of fitness services.

In 2012, California Fitness was acquired by 24 Hour Fitness, a major American fitness chain. However, the brand faced financial difficulties in the following years. In 2016, all California Fitness clubs in Hong Kong were abruptly closed due to financial insolvency, leaving many members without access to the facilities they had paid for.

Despite its closure, California Fitness played a significant role in popularizing fitness culture in Asia. Many former members and employees have continued their fitness journeys, contributing to the growth of the fitness industry in the region.
