Campo, CA

Campo is a small town located in the Mountain Empire area of southeastern San Diego County, California. The population of Campo, as of the 2010 census, was 2,684. The town is best known for its historic railway museum, the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum, and the nearby Campo Indian Reservation.

Geography

• Campo is situated in a valley in the Cuyamaca Mountains, approximately 50 miles east of San Diego. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and rugged terrain, offering a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities.

History

• The area that is now Campo was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. In the late 19th century, the town grew around the Campo Stone Store, which was built in 1868 and is now a registered National Historic Landmark.
