Cardhu distillery is a whisky distillery located in Speyside, Scotland. It is one of the oldest distilleries in the region and is known for producing high-quality single malt Scotch whisky. The distillery is currently owned by Diageo, a multinational alcoholic beverages company.

History[edit | edit source]

The Cardhu distillery was founded in 1824 by John Cumming and his wife, Helen Cumming. The Cummings had been involved in illicit distilling before obtaining a legal license. The distillery was originally known as Cardow, which is derived from the Gaelic word "Carn Dubh," meaning "Black Rock."

In 1885, the distillery was rebuilt by John and Helen's son, Lewis Cumming, to increase production capacity. The new distillery was designed to be more efficient and modern, allowing for greater output and improved quality.

Production[edit | edit source]

Cardhu distillery uses traditional methods to produce its whisky. The process begins with the malting of barley, which is then mashed and fermented. The resulting wash is distilled twice in copper pot stills. The spirit is then aged in oak casks, primarily ex-bourbon casks, for a minimum of three years, although most Cardhu whiskies are aged for much longer.

The water used in the production process is sourced from the nearby Lour Burn, which contributes to the unique character of Cardhu whisky.

Products[edit | edit source]

Cardhu distillery produces a range of single malt whiskies, including:

  • Cardhu 12 Year Old
  • Cardhu 15 Year Old
  • Cardhu 18 Year Old
  • Cardhu Gold Reserve
  • Cardhu Amber Rock

These whiskies are known for their smooth, honeyed flavor profiles with notes of fruit and spice.
