- Carlisle was platted in 1851 and incorporated as a city in 1870. The city was named after Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the original home of an early settler.

- Carlisle is located at 41°30′N 93°29′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.94 square miles, all of it land.

- As of the 2010 census, there were 3,876 people, 1,487 households, and 1,036 families residing in the city.
