Carnobacteriaceae
Carnobacteriaceae is a family of Gram-positive bacteria within the order Lactobacillales. This family of bacteria is characterized by their ability to survive in cold environments, making them of particular interest in the field of cryobiology.
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
The family Carnobacteriaceae is part of the phylum Firmicutes, class Bacilli, and order Lactobacillales. The family currently consists of several genera, including Carnobacterium, Dolosigranulum, Granulicatella, Trichococcus, and Alloiococcus among others.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Members of the Carnobacteriaceae family are Gram-positive bacteria, meaning they retain the violet stain used in the Gram stain procedure. They are typically rod-shaped and are capable of surviving in cold environments, a trait known as psychrophily. Some species within this family are also capable of fermentation, a metabolic process that converts sugar to acids, gases, or alcohol.
Ecology and Significance[edit | edit source]
Carnobacteriaceae are found in a variety of environments, including soil, water, and food products. They are particularly notable for their ability to survive in cold environments, which has implications for food preservation and safety. Some species within this family are used in the food industry for their fermentative abilities, while others are studied for their potential role in disease.
