Carnuntum
Carnuntum was a Roman military camp and later city in what is now Austria. It was the capital of the Pannonia Superior province during the 4th century. Today, it is a significant archaeological site.
History[edit | edit source]
Carnuntum was founded as a Legionary fortress around AD 40 on the right bank of the Danube at the boundary of the Eastern and Western Roman Empire. The Legio XV Apollinaris, stationed at Carnuntum until AD 62, played a significant role in the occupation of the region.
In the 2nd century, Carnuntum experienced a period of prosperity and growth, becoming the capital of Upper Pannonia and gaining city status. During this time, it was a significant trading center, with goods from across the empire found in the archaeological record.
In the 4th century, Carnuntum was the site of the historic meeting between Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, which resulted in the establishment of the Tetrarchy, a system of rule by four emperors.
Archaeological Site[edit | edit source]
Today, Carnuntum is a major archaeological site. The city's remains, including the amphitheater, baths, and fortifications, provide insight into Roman urban life. The site also includes a museum displaying artifacts found during excavations.
