Carroll Rearrangement is a chemical reaction that involves the rearrangement of a glycol into an aldehyde or ketone. The mechanism of the Carroll Rearrangement begins with the protonation of one of the hydroxyl groups in the glycol, followed by the loss of water to form an oxonium ion. This intermediate then undergoes a 1,2-alkyl shift, transferring an alkyl or aryl group from one oxygen to the other. The rearrangement concludes with the deprotonation of the oxonium ion to yield the final carbonyl product. The reaction is facilitated by the application of heat, which helps overcome the energy barrier associated with the rearrangement process.
