Carstairs House, also known as Monteith House, is a historic mansion located in Carstairs, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The house is an example of 19th-century Scottish Baronial architecture and has a rich history associated with the Monteith family and its subsequent owners.

History[edit | edit source]

Carstairs House was built in 1821 for Henry Monteith, a prominent Glasgow merchant and politician. The house was designed by the renowned architect William Burn, who was known for his work in the Scottish Baronial style. The estate originally included extensive grounds and gardens, which were landscaped to complement the grandeur of the house.

In the late 19th century, the house was sold to the Crichton-Stuart family, who made several modifications and additions to the property. During the 20th century, Carstairs House served various purposes, including a period as a psychiatric hospital.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

Carstairs House is a prime example of Scottish Baronial architecture, characterized by its turrets, battlements, and crow-stepped gables. The house features a symmetrical facade with a central tower, which is a hallmark of William Burn's design. The interior of the house includes grand reception rooms, a large dining hall, and numerous bedrooms, all adorned with period features and furnishings.

Current Use[edit | edit source]

Today, Carstairs House is privately owned and has been restored to its former glory. The house and its grounds are occasionally opened to the public for special events and tours, allowing visitors to experience its historical and architectural significance.
