Carter County is a county located in the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 1,160, making it the fifth-least populous county in Montana. The county seat is Ekalaka.

Carter County is located in the southeastern corner of Montana and it shares a border with South Dakota to the east. The county has a total area of 3,348 square miles, of which 3,340 square miles is land and 7.9 square miles is water.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,160 people, 507 households, and 340 families residing in the county. The population density was 0.3 inhabitants per square mile. There were 661 housing units at an average density of 0.2 per square mile.
