Cauda helicis

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Cauda helicis[edit | edit source]

The Cauda helicis is a small, pointed, and slightly curved anatomical structure located on the external part of the human ear. It is a part of the auricle, also known as the pinna, which is the visible part of the ear that resides outside of the head. The cauda helicis is found at the tail end of the helix, hence its name, which translates from Latin to "tail of the helix".

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The cauda helicis is a prominent feature of the external ear's anatomy. It is located at the tail end of the helix, the outer rim of the ear, and extends downwards towards the earlobe. The cauda helicis is made up of cartilage, like the rest of the auricle, and is covered by a thin layer of skin.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the cauda helicis, like the rest of the auricle, is to collect sound waves and funnel them into the ear canal. This helps to amplify the sound and direct it towards the tympanic membrane, or eardrum, for further processing. The shape and position of the cauda helicis aid in this function.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

The cauda helicis, like other parts of the ear, can be affected by various medical conditions. These can include otitis externa, a type of ear infection, and chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis, a painful condition that causes inflammatory lesions on the ear. The cauda helicis can also be involved in certain surgical procedures, such as otoplasty, a type of cosmetic surgery that reshapes the ear.
