Cayuga duck
Cayuga Duck[edit | edit source]
The Cayuga duck is a breed of domestic duck known for its distinctive black plumage with an iridescent green sheen. It is a medium-sized duck that is popular in the United States for its ornamental value and utility as a meat and egg producer.
History[edit | edit source]
The Cayuga duck is believed to have originated in the United States, specifically in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The breed was named after Cayuga Lake, one of the largest of the Finger Lakes. It is thought that the Cayuga duck was developed from a population of wild ducks that were captured and domesticated by early settlers in the area.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Cayuga ducks are known for their striking appearance. Their feathers are predominantly black with a greenish luster that becomes more pronounced in sunlight. As the ducks age, their plumage may develop white patches, which is a normal occurrence.
These ducks are medium-sized, with males (drakes) typically weighing between 7 to 8 pounds and females (hens) weighing slightly less. They have a calm and friendly temperament, making them suitable for backyard flocks.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Cayuga ducks are valued for both their meat and eggs. The meat is considered to be of high quality, with a rich flavor. The hens are moderate layers, producing about 100 to 150 eggs per year. The eggs are initially black or dark gray, but as the laying season progresses, the color lightens to a pale blue or white.
Care and Management[edit | edit source]
Cayuga ducks are hardy birds that can adapt to a variety of climates. They require access to clean water for swimming and foraging, as well as a secure shelter to protect them from predators. Their diet should consist of a balanced feed supplemented with greens and insects.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
The Cayuga duck is listed as "watch" by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, indicating that it is a breed with a limited population. Efforts are being made to preserve this unique breed through breeding programs and increased awareness of its value.
