Cengage Learning was established in 2007 when Thomson Learning was sold by the Thomson Corporation and became an independent company. The company was acquired by Apax Partners and OMERS Capital Partners.
In 2013, Cengage Learning filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing a need to restructure its debt. The company emerged from bankruptcy later that year, having reduced its debt significantly.
