The Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) is the largest governmental research organization in France and is one of the most prominent research institutions in the world. Founded in 1939, the CNRS is a public organization under the responsibility of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

The CNRS was established on October 19, 1939, by decree of the French government.
