Chalica[edit | edit source]

Chalica is a relatively new holiday celebrated by some Unitarian Universalists. It was first observed in 2005 and is celebrated over the course of seven days, with each day dedicated to one of the seven Unitarian Universalist Principles. Chalica begins on the first Monday in December and is a time for reflection, giving, and community.

Origins[edit | edit source]

Chalica was created as a way for Unitarian Universalists to deepen their understanding and practice of their faith's principles. The holiday was inspired by the desire to have a uniquely Unitarian Universalist celebration that focuses on the core values of the faith. It is not an official holiday of the Unitarian Universalist Association, but it has gained popularity among individuals and congregations.

Celebration[edit | edit source]

Each day of Chalica is dedicated to one of the seven principles of Unitarian Universalism:

  1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person.
  2. Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.
  3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations.
  4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
  5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.
  6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.
  7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

On each day, participants light a chalice and reflect on the corresponding principle. They may also engage in activities or acts of kindness that embody the principle. Some people exchange small gifts or perform service projects as part of the celebration.

Significance[edit | edit source]

Chalica provides an opportunity for Unitarian Universalists to focus on their principles in a structured way. It encourages individuals and families to engage in discussions about their values and how they can live them out in their daily lives. The holiday also serves as a reminder of the importance of community and the shared commitment to making the world a better place.
