Chandpur

Chandpur is a district in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh. It is located in the southeastern part of the country and is bordered by Comilla and Noakhali districts to the north, Lakshmipur and Noakhali districts to the east, Lakshmipur and Barisal districts to the south, and Munshiganj and Comilla districts to the west. The district is named after its administrative center, the town of Chandpur.

Chandpur was established as a district in 1984. Prior to that, it was part of the Comilla District. The area has a rich history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to ancient times. It was part of the ancient Samatata kingdom and later came under the rule of the Bengal Sultanate, the Mughal Empire, and the British Raj.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Chandpur District covers an area of 1,704.06 square kilometers. It is characterized by its flat plains and numerous rivers, including the Padma River, the Meghna River, and the Dakatia River. The district is prone to flooding during the monsoon season.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Chandpur District is primarily based on agriculture and fishing. The district is known for its production of hilsa, a type of fish that is a delicacy in Bengali cuisine. Other major crops include rice, jute, and vegetables.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2011 census, Chandpur District had a population of 2,416,018. The majority of the population is Bengali, with a significant minority of Bihari people. The main religions are Islam and Hinduism.

Education[edit | edit source]

Chandpur District has a number of educational institutions, including government and private schools, colleges, and madrasas. The district also has a public university, the Chandpur Science and Technology University.
