Channel 9 was created by a group of five Microsoft employees: Lenn Pryor, Robert Scoble, Charles Torre, Jeff Sandquist, and Bryn Roberts. The name "Channel 9" was inspired by the United Airlines in-flight audio channel that allowed passengers to listen to the cockpit's communication with air traffic control.
