Chapel Hill was founded in 1793 and named after the New Hope Chapel which stood upon a hill at the crossing of two primary roads. The town developed around the university, which was chartered in 1789 and opened its doors to students in 1795.

Chapel Hill is located in the central part of North Carolina. It is bordered by the towns of Carrboro and Durham. The town covers an area of approximately 21.3 square miles.
