Charles's law
Charles's Law, also known as the law of volumes, is a fundamental principle in thermodynamics that describes how gases tend to expand when heated. In its simplest form, Charles's Law states that the volume of a given mass of a dry gas is directly proportional to its temperature when the pressure is kept constant. This relationship was first described by the French scientist Jacques Charles around 1787, although it was later published by Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac.

The mathematical expression of Charles's Law can be written as: \[ V \propto T \] or, equivalently, \[ \frac{V_1}{T_1} = \frac{V_2}{T_2} \] where:
- \(V\) is the volume of the gas,

- \(V_1\) and \(T_1\) are the initial volume and temperature, and
- \(V_2\) and \(T_2\) are the final volume and temperature.
It is crucial to note that Charles's Law applies only to ideal gases, or real gases under conditions of low pressure and high temperature, where they approximate the behavior of an ideal gas.
