Charles Helou (25 September 1913 – 7 January 2001) was a Lebanese politician who served as the President of Lebanon from 1964 to 1970. He was a member of the Kataeb Party and played a significant role in the political landscape of Lebanon during his tenure.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Charles Helou was born in Beirut, Lebanon on 25 September 1913. He pursued his education at the prestigious Saint Joseph University in Beirut, where he studied law and political science.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Helou's political career began with his involvement in the Kataeb Party, also known as the Phalange Party. He was known for his moderate views and efforts to maintain stability in Lebanon during a period of regional turmoil.

Presidency[edit | edit source]

Charles Helou was elected as the President of Lebanon on 23 September 1964, succeeding Fuad Chehab. His presidency was marked by efforts to modernize the country and improve its infrastructure. Helou's administration focused on economic development, education, and healthcare.

During his tenure, Helou faced significant challenges, including political tensions and conflicts within Lebanon and the broader Middle East region. Despite these challenges, he managed to maintain a degree of stability in the country.

Helou's term ended on 22 September 1970, and he was succeeded by Suleiman Frangieh.

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

After leaving office, Charles Helou remained active in public life and continued to contribute to political and social causes in Lebanon. He passed away on 7 January 2001 in Beirut.
